what is the average cost of a diabetic diet?

I live in Boise, ID, I want to avoid having to take insulin, and I am able to control my diabetes by diet, but need to know what a diabetic diet would cost me.

  2. It doesn't have to cost you any more than a regular diet. It just has to be the right choices. The Ideal Breakfast for Diabetics and the Ideal Dinner for Diabetics have ordinary grocery store items but they happen to be low-glycemic.
  3. You actually don't need to follow a certain diet. What I mean is this. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables, meat is ok not too much red meat, cut back on your carbs and starches (potatoes, rice, lasagna, etc.) Eat about 1800 calorie diet. Look at the food pyramid. Right now I am on a low carb diet and I'm Type1 insulin dependent this has helpedmy sugars stay down but I just found out it is bad for your heart so be careful and talk to your doctor. Stay away from sugar and snacks. And exercise everyday. Your weight has a big part of how your sugars will react. Good luck!
  4. The same amount as any other food plan!! probably less because you won't be buying all the junk food. I limit my food plan to a 3 oz serving of some sort of meat and a large salad for 3 of my meals, and half an apple for snack along with a few nuts or serving of cheese. that is way less expensive than buying lots of breads, pastas and other stuff that you don't need. Now if you want to go in for the high $$$ Low Carb, Diabetic, Low FAT labeling, well, be my guest, but basic food is not that expensive.
  5. My husband and I are on a diabetic diet. It cost about $125 - $150 per week for both of us together in Mississippi, so I would say for one it would cost $60 - $100 a week. I also look for sales in the groceries stores and stock up when I run across a good deal. This helps cut down some to. I buy the boneless, skinless chicken breast fillets in the 3lbs bag. This would last one person 2 or 3 weeks. I use Great Value brand from Wal - Mart, which are cheaper than name brands. During the winter when strawberries are so high I buy a 4lbs bag of frozen strawberries, which are just as good as fresh and cheaper. The name is Frozsun Fruits and Vegetables. I also get these at Wal - Mart in the frozen freezer section. I hope this will help you and good luck with your diabetes.
