Healthy weight loss while breast feeding?
I have a 1 month old and am breast feeding. I would like to slowly start losing some of those extra pounds of fat I put on while pregnant and was wondering what was a safe rate of weight loss while breast feeding. To lose weight I plan on focusing on eating especially healthy (no junk), and going on stroller walks.

- Sounds like you have the right idea--between eating sensibly, walking, and breatfeeding, that should take care of the baby weight. It's important not to diet while you are breastfeeding, because your body needs the extra calories to produce an adequate milk supply.
- I didn't have any control over my weight loss. I am 5'11 and I was 165 when I got pregnant (not stick thin but not overweight) I only gained 8lbs while pregnant and that took me up to 173. The doctor said because I am so tall and young (23) that I would be all baby. I am down to 135 and all I have done is breastfeed. It really does take all of your calories just as long as you don't eat junk food all day. My daughter or myself have not had any problems because of my weight loss and I'm lovin' it! I didn't have any control over it tho. Within a couple months I had to go buy pant sizes I haven't worn since high school!
- Breastfeeding and walking will do away with the baby weight... don't try to lose the weight, you're still supposed to be eating a few more calories than the average person because you burn so many by just breast feeding! If you don't eat like you should be... you risk your milk drying up on you and your baby! So don't sweat the weight.. it will come out, for the mean time, just enjoy your baby! congrats!
- Moderate exercise is just fine. Just lay off the hard and very strenuous exercises. Remember- your first priority is keeping your baby healthy! Can I diet while breastfeeding? http://kellymom.com/nutrition/mom/mom-weightloss.html
- Keep doing what you're doing. Breast feeding alone can burn up to 500 calories per day. Maintain a healthy, balanced diet, which is especially important while breast feeding. Keep taking your prenatal vitamins, and go for stroller walks. Another fun way to get exercise is Itsy Bitsy Yoga, which is a Mom and Baby yoga program. Classes are available around the world, and you can also buy the DVD's to use at home with your little one. Good luck!
